Piechart (self portrait)
2011
acrylic, ink, carving on birch panels
12" x 22"
I am fascinated with systems that explain information. I tend to do this automatically since the way of the world makes sense to me visually. This piece is an abstract self portrait. I examined a set of facts about my life and became curious how to depict these visually. It is a diagram of dates, age, grades and places and how these numbers correlate to one another.
The real essence of the piece is the lines and marks. Trained as a printmaker, my interest is in rich and active surfaces. I prefer the specific looking lines created by carving. This is why I work on wood so I can manipulate the surface by carving, painting in layers and sanding to reveal the history beneath.
